Text descriptions can hide the main subject of your photo if you add them using the horizontal orientation. Learning how to rotate text in Photoshop can help you add unique and aesthetically pleasing text descriptions to your real estate photos when retouching them in Photoshop.
Quick Navigation
As a real estate photographer, add text descriptions to your real estate images to help the viewer understand the various features of the property. However, adding text in a horizontal orientation to certain features, such as the hipped edges of the roof or chimney flashing, might confuse the viewer.
Fortunately, Photoshop is a complex photo editing and graphic design software with a wide range of text manipulation tools. These tools allow you to use the following methods to make a complete orientation or slight angle changes on your text to align it with the angle of the feature you want to describe.
The Move tool allows you to move an entire layer or a selection by dragging it using your mouse or keyboard arrow keys. With this flexibility, you can rotate a text using the following tips.
Navigate to File on the menu bar and choose New to launch the New Document dialog box. Alternatively, you can use your keyboard shortcuts Control + N if using a Windows computer or Command + N if using a Mac.
Set the height, width, and resolution of your document. Usually, a resolution of 300 ppi is the standard for print graphics, and 72 ppi is the standard for screen-based graphics. Choose the RGB Color Mode for screen-based graphics and CMYK for print graphics. Click the Create button to open your document.
You can add text to your new document by selecting the Type Tool from the toolbar panel on the left hand of your screen. Type the text and click on the checkmark in the options bar to commit the changes.
Click on the black area in your Text layer to select it, and then press the V key on your keyboard to activate the Move Tool. You can also pick the tool from the toolbar on the left-hand side of your screen. Usually, a blue bounding box surrounding the text will appear.
Hover your mouse near any of the corners of your text, and a double-sided arrow shape will appear. Click and drag your mouse to rotate your text to the orientation of your choice. An angled box appears in your document as you rotate. You can use this as a reference point to achieve your orientation.
Although the text rotates in 0.1 degrees increments by default, you can increase the rotation speed by holding the Shift key as you rotate. Alternatively, you can type the angle in the settings bar and press enter if you have a precise angle you want to rotate your text to.
Rotating each letter in a text is challenging and time-consuming. However, you can rotate your text vertically by selecting the Toggle Text Orientation button in the options bar. Simply highlight the text and click the Toggle Text Orientation button to switch to a vertical set.
Activate the Transform tool if you wish to resize the letters in your text. If you are working on a new document, you can directly type your text using the Vertical Type tool to have your text oriented vertically.
The Transform tool in Photoshop allows you to easily modify your artwork by applying varying transformations on a selection, such as resizing, scaling, warping, or rotating.
Highlight the text by clicking on a blank spot outside the text and then activate the Transform Tool by pressing Command + T on your keyboard if you use a Mac or Control + T if you are using a Windows PC. Alternatively, select Free Transform in the Edit menu on the options bar.
A blue box will appear around the text, just like when using the Move tool. You can then rotate using the same procedure as when using the Move tool.
Generally, rotating a text to a higher orientation, such as 90 degrees or 180 degrees, might be time-consuming when slowly dragging the mouse manually. Fortunately, the Transform tool has quick options for rotating the text.
Simply right-click on your text layer with the Transform tool still active and choose any of the following options:
A Smart Object is a non-destructive layer in Photoshop that allows you to perform edits such as skewing, rotating, or scaling without altering the quality of the layer contents. For instance, if you resize a normal layer, it turns into a low-resolution version and becomes blurry if you enlarge it back to its original size.
If you apply the same edits to a Smart Object, it remains as sharp as it was initially. You can rotate a text with a Smart Object by highlighting the smart object that contains your text and then double-clicking on the image preview to make it editable.
You can then rotate the text using either of the above tools. Since the modification is made within a Smart Object, you must navigate to File and choose Save to commit the changes.
You can further enhance the overall appearance of your text by rotating individual letters instead of the entire text. Highlight your text, choose the Type option from the options bar, and then choose Convert to Shape to convert your text to a shape layer.
Locate the Path Selection Tool from the toolbar or press the A key on your keyboard. Considering all the letters will have anchor points around them indicating a selection, click on the outside of them to deselect them.
Click on a single letter that you wish to rotate to select it. Activate the Transform Tool, rotate the letter like you would have done with the entire text, and press Enter to save the changes. You can use this option to create a unique watermark for your real estate photos when uploading to MLS.
No, rotating an image does not cause any noticeable loss in quality. This is because all kinds of digital edits cause insignificant data loss. This means you can rotate an image in a counterclockwise or a clockwise direction around a fixed point several times and then restore it to its initial orientation without a noticeable quality.
Flipping an image turns it either vertically to create a mirror reflection effect or horizontally to create a water reflection effect. On the other hand, rotation moves the image right or left around an axis, keeping the face towards you.
Knowing how to rotate text in Photoshop can help you add a text description to your images, with the text aligning with the feature you are describing. Simply type your text, highlight the layer, and rotate it using the Move or Transform tool.
